LYON | THE GASTRONOMIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD & BEYOND
Lyon has been deemed the gastronomic capital of the world and for good reason. Thanks to Paul Bocuse, Lyon became the birthplace of nouvelle cuisine in the 1970s and in recent years was chosen to be the international capital of Gastronomy. Boasting incredible dining experiences in Bouchons—the Lyonnais restaurants that serve local fare the city of Lyon has been a favorite for food lovers.
LYON also makes a great gateway to the scenic wine country of Burgundy whose terroir was recently awarded UNESCO heritage status is the ultimate destination for fine wine lovers and bon vivants looking for an unforgettable gourmet tour in France. This is the home of the world’s best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir featuring in many a wine collector’s libraries.
While vines are thought to have arrived in Burgundy from Greece via Marseille around 600 BC, it was the Cistercian and Benedictine monks who were responsible for the careful cultivation of the first vineyards in the region. The 1100-year-old Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was one of the most important and powerful spiritual capitals in medieval Europe and it was there that the monks cultivated the first quality and terroir conscious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They delineated many of the boundaries of the same vineyard that we still see today! The Cistercians also disciplined vine production and founded the beautiful Clos de Vougeot, which you will visit on this tour.
You will taste exquisite reds from the Côte de Nuits as well as taste the “Rolls Royce of whites” from the Côte de Beaune. Apart from fine wines, Burgundy is also a food lover’s paradise. Favorite culinary staples like Boeuf Bourguignon and Coq au Vin originate here. Local delicacies in the region include Dijon mustard, blackcurrants, Chanterelles, Morels, Ceps and another 100 mushroom varieties as well as a treasure trove of mouth-watering cheeses.
From Burgundy, we make our way up to the Alsatian wine region. Alsace is one of France’s most unusual and exciting wine regions. Although it is arguably less well known and traveled than its more famous cousin, Burgundy, it is equally capable of producing great and majestic wines. Culturally it is as much German as it is French due to its proximity to the German Border. Indeed, twice during the last 130 years, it has been under German control.
It is undoubtedly one of France’s most spectacular regions to visit and a paradise for wine lovers. The splendor of the Vosges Mountains is complemented by the medieval architecture of many towns and villages.
With this tour, we follow the ultimate wine road from Burgundy to Alsace.

What Guests are saying about our tours...
"It is clear that Dev devoted a lot of time and effort to focus on all of the details. The result was a trip of a lifetime! Without the tour, I doubt that I would have seen the Pannonhalma Archabbey, prepared goulash over an open fire, or heard the passion of the Tokaj vintners."
